Event Details

Youth Steelband Open and Trinidadian Arts and Culture Festival at Texas A&M, Nov 2-4. Organized by Dr. Castor, with Dr. Kattari (Performance Studies, Texas A&M) and Take Stok (non-profit). This three-day festival was filled with the sounds of steelpan, student performances of calypso, folktales, and stick fighting, and soca artist T-rock again. Visiting Trinidadian Dr. Kim Johnson brought his expertise on pan and culture answering students questions for over an hour on his documentary Pan! Our Music Odyessy.  And we were also joined by Trinidadian spoken word artist Mtiba Solwazi of Roots Foundation TT whose performances and insights were masterful contributions. Not to forget the pan-tuning demonstration and lecture by the world’s only female pan tuner Emily Lemmerman of Barracuda Steel Drums. Amazing food was provided by Stush Caribbean Fusion of Houston.
